Plan to mine the sun’s energy

WHEAL Hughes Mine, Moonta, could become home to a five-megawatt solar farm.

Copper Coast Council’s elected members voted in favour of leasing a section of the Spencer Highway site for 30 years to a suitable solar power production company.

Council CEO Peter Harder said three business had approached council about constructing solar structures but were initially rebuffed as staff couldn’t justify leasing farmland for the ventures.
