Your View: An unseen epidemic

I HAVE been putting up some posters for an upcoming community event presented by SOS Copper Coast Suicide Prevention Network recently, so the matter of depression and suicide has been quite front and centre in my mind.

A recent conversation with an acquaintance and a colleague on a completely separate matter came sharply into focus when each of us spoke about knowing people who had taken their own lives, or had expressed a wish to.

When you hear firsthand that members of our community have taken their own lives, not only recently, but in numbers of more than just one or two, it’s very sobering.

Even in a relatively small and tight-knit community like ours, death by suicide is frighteningly commonplace, and yet rarely discussed. It truly is an unseen epidemic, and it’s way past time to bring it out in the open.

We are very lucky to have a community organisation like SOS Copper Coast working proactively within the community to raise awareness and provide a hub to vital services for any of us who may need them. The evening mentioned earlier in this letter is a free community event at the Wallaroo

Community Sports Club at 7pm on Wednesday, February 21. It is a night of frank, open and personal storytelling and conversation, featuring well known AFL Hall of Fame footballer, Wayne Schwass.
