However, it’s time for the federal government and opposition to commit to a long-term, secure funding stream for the NDIS, to spare Australians with a disability unnecessary stress and fear. Until a permanent funding source has been identified, and set aside from general revenue and expenditure, people with a disability and carers will remain anxious about the future of the NDIS.
We all remember one of Australia’s proudest moments when the NDIS legislation was unanimously passed, and our high hopes for a better future for people with a disability. Yet today the job is still not finished. Members of Parliament and the Senate must aside political point-scoring and work together to establish a secure and permanent source of NDIS funding.
People with a disability need a strong and secure NDIS, so they have confidence to look beyond immediate challenges, knowing support will be there to create a life of their own choosing in the long term.
People with a disability and carers need and deserve the opportunity to plan their lives, study and train for roles in the workforce, live independent lives, begin families, establish a home and fulfil their dreams just like anyone else.
I ask the Commonwealth Government to establish permanent measures to fund the NDIS in the budget, and ensure the promise of the NDIS will be delivered now and into the future.
