Your View: Token spend

THAT $670,000 is to be spent upgrading part of the Maitland to Minlaton road might sound impressive ($5.67 million for road upgrades, YPCT 27-11-18).

However, I seem to recall on two separate occasions, gangs and machines assembled to upgrade two separate sections between Urania and Maitland. On a more recent occasion, between Minlaton and Urania, shoulders of gravel were provided for several kilometres of the bitumen.

Including all “improved” sections mentioned, the entire Minlaton-Maitland road remains dangerously undulating and narrow when shared with other vehicles, including grain trucks in particular. By providing yet another Band-aid job, I can’t foresee much improvement from a token spend of $670,000.

This road forms part of an increasingly-important business, industry, sporting and tourist link between the north and south of Yorke Peninsula and only a serious overall upgrade will ever improve it to a safe and acceptable standard.
