WORKS have now been completed on Bute’s colourful silo mural.
Locals and visitors have been seen stopping by the town’s latest attraction, with the final touches added last week.
Bute 2000 Onwards Progress Committee received $50,000 through the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal’s Tackling Tough Times Together program, before Barunga West Council matched the funding, bringing the total funding to $100,000.
Sydney-based artistic duo Scott Nagy and Janne Birkner were commissioned to develop a design for the mural based on feedback from a community survey, before painting the entire eastern face of the silo from top to bottom.
Mayor Leonie Kerley said the final result was fabulous.
“The survey revealed the highest priorities were lots of colour and elements of local agriculture, including flora and fauna — all of this has been incorporated,” Mrs Kerley said.
“Our silo is completely unique and will help attract visitors to the Top of the Yorke.”
Mr Nagy said he was drawn to the opportunity by the potential for creative freedom.
“We’ve incorporated as much of the local community as possible without being too specific,” he said.
“At the start we sketched the outline, then filled the base layer, and completed about five layers over the top.
“There’s now local flora and fauna, a young girl who represents the relationship with the land, the Hummocks in the background and even a rooster.”
The art will complement the Connecting Bute’s Outdoor Play Spaces project, which secured $250,000 in state government funding in January.
This redevelopment is set to include a silo viewing platform, additional walking trails and an asphalt BMX track.
