HAIR on Hallett, Kadina, is part of a growing movement of sustainable salons doing their bit for the environment.
Salon owner Emma Illicevs started shifting to an eco-friendlier way of hairdressing about five years ago after learning about the Sustainable Salon program.
While the program, which enables hairdressers and beauticians to recycle about 95 per cent of their products, hadn’t made it into South Australia yet, Emma was not deterred.
“We spoke to the Copper Coast Council to see what we could do and what we could recycle and we could do quite a bit,” she said.
“The alfoil used for colours could be scrunched up into a ball and recycled, we could do paper and some other plastics too.
“We did the best we could for about three years.”
Hair on Hallett became a Sustainable Salon member about 18 months ago.
“They send out a bin system with sections for each type of product and once they are full, you call them and they come, collect it and take it to their facilities in the eastern states,” Emma said.
“The plastic bottles are turned into park benches and pet collars, the hair is put in stockings and used to create hair booms which are used to soak up an oil spill, and hair more than 20cm is cut in a specific way that it can be then turned into wigs for people with alopecia or to the Cancer Council.
“To be a member, it works out at about $2 per client and we have absorbed that fee for now.
“We have some stickers around the salon which highlight facts about Sustainable Salons, and people will often ask about it.
“They’re always surprised and supportive.”
Used alfoil is recycled and able to be purchased by participating salons too.
“The great part of Sustainable Salons too is products are recycled and then sold, with the money going to charities like OzHarvest.”
Emma and the team at Hair on Hallett are also strong believers in supporting local Australian brands.
At the same time as they started taking a more sustainable look at materials, Emma started investigating low-tox living and made the shift to more organic, vegan, cruelty free, ammonia free, preservative free and eco products where possible.
“It’s important to me that the brands we use have the same ethos as us,” she said.
Hair on Hallett is open 9am to 5pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday and from 9am to 8pm on Tuesday and Thursday.
