KERNEWEK Lowender Copper Coast Cornish Festival is celebrating it 50th anniversary this year.
The inaugural festival was held in 1973 and has continued to celebrate the unique heritage and traditions of the region known as Australia’s Little Cornwall on a biennial basis.
“There are more than 60 events planned for this year’s seven-day festival,” committee president Lynn Spurling said.
“To celebrate 50 years, visitors will have the opportunity to experience not only the traditional iconic events, but also past favourites from previous festivals such as high teas and ploughman’s lunches.
“The Copper Coast towns of Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo will come alive for the festival and offer the opportunity to enjoy a Cornish pasty, locally brewed Swanky, food, entertainment, art, concerts and dancing.
“We hope major events like the Moonta parade and Fer Kernewek, maypole and furry dancing, Kadina Village Fair, Wallaroo Street Party, Cavalcade of Cars and Motorcycles and Fun Fair will once again draw large crowds post-Covid.
“The art prize, Cousin Jack and Jenny competition, Dressing the Graves and pasty bake-off are also festival favourites which should be well attended.”
Mrs Spurling thanked all sponsors and event partners for their support of the festival, particularly major partners Copper Coast Council and SA Tourism Commission.
“With the ongoing support of the local community, sponsors, businesses and volunteers, this festival should once again be a successful event attracting many returning or new visitors to our area,” she said.
“The printed program is now available at Copper Coast information centres, businesses and event partners, as well as online at www.kernewek.org with regular updates posted to Facebook.
“With the program out so early, there will be additional events added so everyone is encouraged to keep up to date using these platforms.”
The Kernewek Lowender office (co-located with the Copper Coast Visitor Information Centre, 50 Mines Road, Kadina) is open from 10am to 4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, or call 8821 4500.
