ST MARY MacKillop School, Wallaroo, is community driven and focused.

This week, Mother’s Day, Catholic Education, Volunteers and Families Weeks, as well as the Kernewek Lowender Copper Coast Cornish Festival all coincide.

“This fits together beautifully with our school theme for the year, Called to Community,” Principal Michelle Miller said.

“At St Mary MacKillop School, we work with families to prepare children to take their place as thriving individuals, ready and willing to contribute to their communities.”

Community participation and awareness of others is an important part of students’ learning and experiences.

“The students see their parents, grandparents, staff and others volunteering, they see this at school, in sporting clubs and community events and they grow up learning that’s just what you do — you give back to your community,” Ms Miller said.

“We have many people volunteer their time to help at the school in various capacities.

“Recently we had the mother of one of our staff members donate some beautiful blankets she made — reception students then visited Star of the Sea Home for the Aged and delivered the blankets to grateful residents.”

The school recently held a Mother’s Day picnic to say thank you to all the mums and had great attendance — families are at the centre of the school.

“This coming week we will participate in the Kernewek Lowender,” Ms Miller said.

“It is great to see our students get involved in singing, making floral tributes for Dressing the Graves and dancing in the maypole and furry dances.

“The students will also be involved in many events for Catholic Education Week.

“Being a part of the community at these big events is very rewarding and gives us all a connection to our school community, the local community and the wider community.”
