WITH a federal election around the corner, the big question at kitchen tables across the regions is “Who can we trust to represent us better than the major parties?”

This is the question also being asked by Independent for Grey, a community-driven initiative dedicated to securing independent representation for the electorate of Grey in South Australia.

IFG spokesperson Jack Ritchie says people are rightly frustrated by the way the big parties misunderstand and neglect local issues, especially outside the urban belt and regional centres.

“Grey is massive — Australia’s fourth largest electorate — and it’s incredibly diverse,” he says.

“It’s fair to ask, ‘How can an independent manage something this big?’

“The answer is alliances like the Community Independents Network, informed by communities of interest right across the electorate.

“By teaming up, independents can share resources, support each other, and even vote as a block when it makes sense, all while staying true to their own communities and values.

“It’s a win-win for voters.”

Mr Ritchie says, while Grey is a broad area, what matters is communities’ shared values.

“Out here, we care about the land and the climate,” he says.

“We have to — it’s our livelihoods and that of our children and grandchildren on the line.

“We’re tired of city-centric ‘solutions’ that don’t fit our reality and often make things worse.

“What we want are practical, local answers that work for us, not against us.”

He also says the importance of improving healthcare resources and housing affordability are front and centre for IFG.

“We’re locals running a local campaign, and we’re looking for a local candidate,” he says.

“Do you know someone who’d be perfect for the job?

“Think about it — who in your community could really make a difference?

“Nominate them, encourage them.

“The best people don’t put themselves forward, so we need to push them forward.

“Let’s find someone who can truly represent us.”
