“Restoration will be this evening” says SA Power

SA POWER Networks has advised that power will be restored to Yorke Peninsula by this evening.

ElectraNet has advised SA Power Networks that restoration will be at some point this evening (March 14).

Residents will be advised via SMS, social media and the SA Power Networks website when power is restored.

However, some southern YP residents have advised the YP Country Times their power came back on today around 4pm.

SA Power Networks Manager of External Affairs Cecilia Schutz said this was an extremely rare occurrence that can only be fixed by rain.

”This is a one in 10 to 15 year event, attributable to the driest summer in 33 years,” Ms Schutz said.

”SA Power Network crews have been working to clean affected insulators, but with over 650,000 Stobie poles across the state, it is not feasible to clean every insulator.

”The most effective resolution to this issue will come with significant rainfall — we need at least 10mm of rain in a 24-hour period.”

Approximately 25,000 residents across YP had no power as a result of faults that occurred in ElectraNet’s hummocks substation.

These faults were because of insulator pollution — an issue which has been impacting the network for several weeks.

This is caused by the accumulation of salt and dirt on powerline equipment because of ongoing dry conditions.

These conditions have worsened over the past seven weeks due to the lack of rainfall, according to SA Power Network.
