Goody wins state MVP at national championships

Edithburgh footballer Shineah Goody put in yet another elite performance in South Australia’s final game of the 2022 Under 18 Girls AFLW National Championships, to be named the side’s most valuable player for the carnival.
SA defeated Victoria Metro by three points at Avalon Airport (Werribee) Oval on Friday, April 22, giving SA three wins from its three championship games.
Goody kicked two critical third-quarter majors before SA survived a last-quarter charge and a couple of dubious umpiring decisions to win a thriller by three points, 5.3 (33) to 4.6 (30).
“It was a dour game of football, as the Victorians tend to play,” SANFL head of talent Brenton Phillips said.
“Shineah was outstanding across the game, and her two goals in the third quarter were critical to the side’s victory.
“She is a quiet girl who lets her football do the talking.”
Announced as SA’s MVP across the championships in the post-game ceremony, Goody finished this last match with a game-high 27 disposals, 18 handballs, three marks, seven tackles and six clearances.
“Playing in my own age group, I found the game a lot faster than SANFL Women’s footy,” Goody said.
“The skillset is stronger and the games were competitive.
“Winning (the) MVP award is my highest honour in football so far.”
After the titles, along with the best teenage female footballers in the land, Goody spent the weekend at the AFL Academy.
“We took a bus to Nike Headquarters in Melbourne and had a dinner there on the Friday night,” Goody said.
“The Prespakis sisters, 2020 AFLW best and fairest Madison and her younger sister Georgie, had a chat to our AFL Academy group about their footy journeys and life inside and outside the game.
“After getting all our apparel, we went to the St Kilda Football Club on Saturday morning and to the Danny “Spud” Frawley Centre for a light training and recovery session.
“The SA Academy girls flew back to Adelaide on Saturday afternoon.”
Goody is in her second season with the Woodville-West Torrens; she has been a part of the Port Adelaide Football Club Women’s Academy and said she hoped to be collected in the 2023 AFLW Draft.
