CHRISTMAS Is everyone’s favourite time of year, but it is also a peak time for the collection of unwanted stuff. 

In time for Christmas, Copper Coast residents can take advantage of council’s bi-annual kerbside giveaway on November 23 and 24. 

Copper Coast Council is encouraging residents to put their unwanted household items, that are too good to throw away, onto the kerbside so that other residents get a chance to reuse them. 

It is the circular economy in action, and an example of how the council is encouraging reuse. 

To help spread the word about recycling, and safe disposal of tricky items, council recently hosted Wallaroo Primary School’s year 5 and 6 class for a guided tour of the Wallaroo Resource Recovery Centre. 

Council’s waste and inspectorate co-ordinator Simon Neumann focused his message on the small changes the students can make at home to help create a healthier and cleaner environment. 

“Things like proper recycling practice and taking advantage of council’s bi-annual kerbside giveaway are great ways to make a start towards a strong circular economy on the Copper Coast,” Mr Neumann said. 

Meanwhile, KESAB and Plastic Free South Australia are supporting Council businesses to transition away from single use plastics. SA is a national leader in this space, with recent plastic bans introduced in September and more to come from September 2025. 

A drop-in information session and presentation on the transition was held at Moonta Town Hall recently, which included a presentation by Jo Gibbons from Taste the Yorke, who shared her experiences and sustainability practices. 

The following day, Plastic Free SA and KESAB staff visited a number of local businesses to support their transition to plastic free options. 

These were; Taste the Yorke, Port Hughes General Store, Café Moonta, the Cornish Kitchen, Chill and Chat (at Kadina Showgrounds), Philena’s Food Van and Cracked Pepper Café, which have all registered with Plastic Free SA to access support.
