WINTER is here, which means many of our beloved pets will start to experience symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Seaside Veterinary Surgery, Wallaroo, have several different management and treatment options available to keep your pets comfortable.

“The single most important thing you can do for your arthritic pet is to help them maintain a healthy body weight,” owners Dr Amanda Bunney and Dr Nat Wakeham say.

“Being overweight increases your pet’s risk of many serious health conditions, especially arthritis.

“Losing weight has been shown to help reduce pain and lameness for arthritic pets, reducing the need for medical intervention.”

Aching joints may make pets reluctant to exercise.

“However, gentle, controlled exercise is crucial for the health and general wellbeing of arthritic pets,” they say.

“It helps maintain a healthy weight, prevents muscle wastage and reduces the strain on their joints.”

Seaside Vets encourage owners to use joint supplements to help aid in the ongoing support of arthritis.

“There are many options available, though we recommend 4Cyte, as this product has been through clinical trials that show its benefit for arthritis,” they say.

“Working synergistically with joint supplements, monthly injections can help provide pain relief and maintain joint health.

“Our vets can recommend the best option for your pet after an assessment.”

Pain relief medications can also be used to help keep your pets comfortable to help reduce swelling, stiffness and joint pain.

“A cozy heated kennel or heated bed are also great options to increase comfort during the colder months,” they say.

“Winter can be a tough time for pets that suffer with osteoarthritis, especially our older, senior fur kids; but, with the right treatments in place, we can ensure they are as cozy and comfortable as possible for as long as possible.”
