YORKES Meat and Smallgoods, Kadina, extended its claim as the best butchers on Yorke Peninsula, after winning two Australian Meat Industry state awards earlier this month.

The butchers won first place in both the best traditional barbecue sausage and lamb burger categories.

Yorkes Meat and Smallgoods manager Robert Waters says the business, which he took over about four years ago, values these accolades.

“It’s a pretty big achievement because we were competing against all manufacturers and butchers in South Australia.

“We produce a quality product, and we use a lot of local produce; we have our own piggery, and all my lamb is sourced locally.”

Yorkes Meat and Smallgoods won two of the 10 categories it entered and will now go onto the national awards in February.

The business is the only independent butcher in Kadina and is continuing to expand, soon to employ seven butchers.

Although it is humbling to be recognised in awards like this, the future of the business is equally as exciting, Mr Waters says.

The Yorkes Meat and Smallgoods premises are being renovated, to make room for more staff and larger machinery, which will help create jobs and maintain a quality product.

“One of my goals is to create more local jobs and we make all of our smallgoods with a unique recipe without using premixes as such, which a lot of manufacturers do.

“You can buy commercially made premixes and things like that with a few seasonings, but ours are all from-scratch recipes.”

Yorkes Meat and Smallgoods is located at 20 Taylor Street, Kadina.
