Girls flock to footy try outs
2 min read

More than 20 women and girls came to give football a go at a come and try day at Moonta Oval on Sunday, December 18.

Moonta Football Club is attempting to enter a senior team in the Mid North Women’s Football Competition and under 14 and u17 teams in the Northern Plains Female Football League, with both competitions starting in February.

Club president Mark Durdin said he was impressed by the turnout from across the peninsula.

“Obviously it was a Moonta FC event, but some of the girls were in their Wallaroo or Kadina gear, which really signifies just how big of a group effort this is,” he said.

“From what I gather, pretty much everyone who attended has committed to playing next year which is fantastic.

“We’ve had a lot of optimistic talk and response since launching this project, and it has certainly brought an extra positive factor for the club.”

Sign up day draws crowd

Moonta Football Club welcomed more than 20 participants to the town oval for its female footy come and try day on Sunday, December 18.

Coming from all across Yorke Peninsula and Port Pirie, attendees engaged in simple drills organised by SANFL game development coordinator Will Schultz and took the time to familiarise themselves with the club.

Moonta is attempting to enter a senior team in the Mid North Women’s Football Competition and under 14 and U17 teams in the Northern Plains Female Football League.

Pleasingly for club president Mark Durdin, the vast majority of those who attended had already or subsequently registered to play.

“It was great to see the girls from everywhere involved and obviously it was a Moonta FC event, but some of the girls were in their Wallaroo or Kadina gear, which really signifies just how big of a group effort this is,” he said.

“From what I gather, pretty much everyone who attended has committed to playing next year which is fantastic.

“We’ve had a lot of optimistic talk and response since launching this project, and it has certainly brought an extra positive factor for the club.”

Attention now turns to putting teams on the field, with the season set to begin in February.

The club has also decided on coaches for the senior side, with Nick and Kara Rendell set to provide coaching and fitness leadership respectively.

“We’re actually going to start training for the seniors in January on Mondays and Wednesdays,” Durdin said.

“The fixtures aren’t set yet but the senior side will start on Friday, February 17 in the Crystal Brook competition and we understand the juniors will be on Sunday, February 19.”
